Local Dayton Artistry: Blue Car

Dayton Ohio is not known for its variety of movies filmed here. Especially compared to somewhere like Hollywood Dayton has nearly no well-known films that were made but there are still a few. A local piece that has found success at the Sundance film festival is “Blue Car”.

The plot of “Blue Car” is focused on a young woman by the name of Meg. She is a high school senior living in Dayton Ohio. Her home life is far from ideal and she copes with her situation through her poetry. Her father has abandoned her and her mother is neglectful leaving her to care for her younger sister.

Over the course of the film Megs situation goes from bad to worse. Many misfortunes befall Meg ranging from a psychiatric stay and later suicide of her younger sister to abuse at the hands of a mentor figure.

However Meg maintains her love of poetry throughout these ordeals and even comes out the end of the movie going off to live with her father, driving off in a blue car.

This tale is a gripping story of tragedy and hope. A strong heroine finding her place in the world and the light at the end of the tunnel through her poetry moved the people at the Sundance film festival and even found success with a professional film company.

Miramax Films distributed Blue Car with a limited release but that was enough. It was critically acclaimed on both Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. The reviewers praised the realism and genuine nature of the film.

For readers who wish to see this film for themselves it can be found on Amazon Prime for $3.79 to rent and $9.99 to own at the link below.
